I teach Japanese. Sometimes I teach from Genki. Sometimes Quartet. Sometimes, I free myself from the shackles of the textbook gods and create something unique, born out of the primordial chaos of... Yeah, you get the point.

Oh, yeah, living where the language is primary is a huge help. I learned Korean using similar methods while living and working there. I wasn't generally embarrassed over my mistakes and it never bothered me when people would laugh - I was "playing" with it anyway, so hey, we can all have fun, right?
If you write that text book, I'll buy it day one! (See - conditional form) 😊
I use this app called "Teuida" and I gotta say, it's pretty good. It's free and set up pretty well! If I could, I would tell my past self to download it.
You could have snuck in the kanji for "kan" in kanji :,)
im gonna give it shot! arigatou
Having informally read linguistics, I understand where this is coming from. However, within the U.S. military those of us who were trained in foreign languages for intel purposes were officially called "linguists". Having carried that title for more than 50 years, I'm not going to give it up without a fight. I am a polyglot, but I also like digging into how languages work.
I'm going to crib your "only so much room for originality at the N5 level" and say that most of the lessons are going to be similar between the two books. They're aiming to accomplish the same thing with the same method, target material, and target outcome, so they're going to be similar. Typing is a cool feature if you're using a native keyboard, but most IMEs allow typing phonetically for Japanese. Would be much more useful for Korean, since I haven't seen a phonetic IME for it. I'm actually a fan of the vocabulary presentation (with pictures plus plain list) because I feel that seeing information in different formats can aid integration. I agree that it's redundant, but I kind of like it. So, from your comparison, it's six one, half-dozen the other, depending on individual preference and learning style. Kudos for the solid, fair comparison. The 150 yen difference isn't enough to sway my personal choice here, and the extra polish on some points in Tobira might be a call to Genki to dust off a new edition with some of these features (like you say, Genki 2.5). My Japanese is sub-survival level, but I kind of collect language texts since my time living in Korea so I'll probably add Tobira to my Genki collection. Thanks for taking the time to go over this stuff.
We need them for the JLPT4 :(. Thanks for this lesson
Should I buy it new or used?
daredemonai could be translated as not anyone, instead of no one. That way you don't have to trick yourself.
Adding a DS game to the mix is legendary! Turning my 2ds on now to get that!
wow. just starting on this journey, but this makes the most sense. If I was young and had a summer to cram I would do RTK as a challenge. but to want to integrate all that I am studying now, reading, listening, shadowing, grammar... Andy's approach seems to be a perfect complementary progress loop. Wouldn't be surprised if this guy builds a grammar book in the future that surpasses Genki.
i would love to read one piece in japanese, but ill have to wait lot more to do that
Ando-san was in very good form in this video! lol
Is Hanzi and kanji the same or do they have different meanings
Now that you practiced letter by letter, I would like to see you writing in context, like some phrases, and having her to point out what would go better in the whole harmonization
バナナが好きです!
U sound cute in Japanese 😂
Thanks this really cleared things up for me
書道の経験が出ますね
Dude, you totally got 'jozu'ed.
Why is it あそこに and not あそこで?
My goodness what a clickbait title …
Was it a lie? 🤔
バナナが(大)好きです
trusr me guys im learning kanji myself and without kanji you'll have a big paragraph just for one sentence
That new series on how Kanji are made & tips for memorizing would be incredibly appreciated <3

Where can we find the history of each kanji, AKA what it used to look like? 10:21
It's vertical writing, great tip
May god bless you <3

The four mnemonic was the kind of mnemonic that I’m skeptical of because - if you can remember that there are 4 legs-in-mouth combos, then you could have just remembered that legs-in-mouth means four. Why not five? Or six? Or country? I have come up with a better mnemonic 😌 : When you see a woman with beautiful legs walking down the street, you open your mouth in astonishment and say A-SHI! Meaning, legs. Also, SHI means four, so there you have it!
Then I must recommend Immersive Translate for you. When I learn Japanese, I often encounter unfamilar words that I need to use Immersive Translate to help me look up their meanings and then memorize them
This is more than just a video; it's a testament to the transformative power of love and joy, even in the face of grief.
at 19:46 for "the hot summer is coming", why is the particle が used instead on に。thank you
I'm still here, man!!!!
ありがとう先生
i am very greatfull that my mothertongue is turkish becacuse the grammer is literally the same. like we also use present tense for future and habitual things. as i am learning japanese in english i sometimes find the turkish examples for it like "utaimas"i will sing but it is present tense. "söylerim" is in the present tense in turkish but it can both means i will sing or i sing generally/habitually
Amazing job teaching this. Thank you :)

This was such a brilliant video. Digestable, clear, concise, fun, and informative.
Hello I’m new to the channel and I’m learning to speak Japanese. Is purchasing the Genki book still necessary if I watch these videos? Just wondering because I don’t want to buy something I would not be using.
Thank you!;😂 I have a schedule to taught myself. And this material awesome! Perfect for my 30 Minutes of grammar! You're awesome!! Again thank you.
